A watermark says what a copy is for. DRAFT on a circulating version stops someone quoting it as final. CONFIDENTIAL on an export makes the handling rule visible on every page rather than only in a covering email. A client name across a proof marks who it was prepared for.
The mark is drawn over the existing page rather than into it. Nothing underneath is redrawn, so text stays selectable and searchable, images keep their original bytes and the file barely grows.
The built-in PDF fonts cover Latin alphabets and accented characters. Cyrillic, Greek and CJK are refused rather than drawn as a row of boxes, which is what happens when a font is asked for a glyph it does not have.
