A .txt file is the most portable thing there is and the least presentable. It opens in a different font, at a different width, with different line breaks on every machine. A PDF fixes all of that: what you see is what the recipient sees.
Long lines are wrapped to the text column, and the blank lines between your paragraphs are kept, so a document that was formatted by hand still reads the way it was written.

The built-in PDF fonts cover Latin alphabets and accented characters. Cyrillic, Greek and CJK cannot be drawn with them, so the text is refused rather than converted into a page of black boxes.
